At the southern tip of Lake Iseo is a magical place where the meeting of water and land gives rise to an area of great naturalistic interest protected by Regione Lombardia. It’s Torbiere del Sebino, a natural peat bog area declared “Wetland of International Importance”, “Special Area of Conservation” (SAC), and “Special Protection Area” (SPA).

The nature of Lake Iseo becomes a treasure. Let’s find out more.

The breathtaking colors of Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve

The Torbiere del Sebino area covers about 360 hectares within the municipalities of IseoProvaglio d’Iseo, and Corte Franca.

The area is a wetland/marshland recognized as Nature Reserve. Its rushes and ponds are perfectly integrated in the surrounding landscape made of cultivated fields, houses, and small roads in the Franciacorta region.

New things emerge as the eyes explore the reserve: the central area of Lame is a large expanse of water enclosed by embankments; in the north, Lamette is a peat bog lagoon directly on the lake (not open to visitors), whereas basins are everywhere in the south and west, and fields and meadows nearby.

It is a hugely valuable ecological mix in which visitors can enjoy intense sunrises and sunsets, surrounded by the tranquility of nature.

Flora and fauna in the Torbiere del Sebino.

Numerous factors influence the flora, especially the depth of water: very different species coexist at the peat bogs, including some exotic plants.

The fauna in here comprises three classes: mammals (shrew, musk shrew, hazel mouse), fish (tench, pike, eel, royal perch, carp, catfish) and birds (purple heron, western marsh harrier, brown kite, great bittern); some of these bird species nest, while others are migratory.
