One of the most important late antique villas in northern Italy, on the shores of Lake Garda
The Roman Villa of Desenzano was built in several phases between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD. Originally overlooking directly the lake, it stood just north of the Via Gallica — the main road connecting Bergamo, Brescia and Verona.
What is visible today largely belongs to the final phase of construction, when the building underwent a complete reorganisation of its spaces.
The identity of the villa’s owners remains uncertain, but it is possible that the patron of this last phase was Flavius Magnus Decentius, brother of Emperor Magnentius (350–353 AD) — a figure who may have given the city of Desenzano its current name.
Within the archaeological area stands the Antiquarium, with three exhibition rooms housing the most significant finds uncovered during excavations.
