Bienno, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, is an incredibly charming historical location and the pride of mid-Valle Camonica. Plenty of stunning views, picturesque courtyards, and highlights make this village a true gem amidst the green Valle Camonica mountains.

Bienno: mansions and ancient crafts

Built on what was a stunning example of Roman settlement, this medieval town welcomes every year thousands of tourists who come to explore and enjoy its mansions, museums, frescoed churches, natural spots, and excellent local dishes.

Walking in Bienno means taking a step back in time, experiencing a simple lifestyle away from the chaos of large cities, and savoring the atmosphere of old craft workshops. The latter finds its utmost expression during the Bienno Market Exhibition, the main August event in Valle Camonica.

Among the many mansions and historical buildings of Bienno, some undoubtedly stand out: Palazzo Simoni Fè (home to the art gallery), Renaissance-style Palazzo Francesconi Rebajoli, and the Mill&Forge Museum, the core of the Ethnographic Museum of Iron, Arts, and Popular Traditions in Bienno. Casa degli Artisti (or Casa Valigia) is also very interesting: exhibits and workshops are available for visitors.

Churches and spiritual centers in Bienno

Spirituality is one of the key elements of the history and artistic heritage of Bienno.

Let’s start with the Parish Church of Saints Faustino and Giovita in the upper part of the town. It contains works by Fiamminghino and Mauro della Rovere. The organ was made by the Antegnati brothers.

Bienno is also known for another two important spiritual centers. The first is the Maddalena hill with its statue of Christ the King, an impressive 8-meter sculpture made of pure gold which is visible from several areas of the valley. The second, a spiritual reference point for the whole province, is Saints Pietro and Paolo Hermitage. It’s a peaceful oasis surrounded by nature with an extraordinary natural terrace perched over Valle Camonica. The hermitage has 50 guest bedrooms, a 200-seat auditorium, and conference rooms.

In addition to the churches, the hermitage, and the statue of Christ the King, there are several frescoes and bas reliefs testifying to the spirituality of this place. As you tour the town, you will be surprised by its many unexpected iconographic elements. For further information, visit the official website www.bienno.info.

From hiking trails to the table

Bienno is an excellent starting point for hiking in Valle Camonica. From the town, you can easily reach trails, forests, cultivated fields, and the best mountain huts and passes in the area. The closest excursions are Campolaro and the Bazena Pass a little higher up.

The provincial road ends at the Crocedomini Pass, visited every year by thousands of motorcyclists and cyclists. In the summer, this is a perfect natural place for picnics, whereas in the winter it turns into a fun bobsled and ski track. Speaking of bikes, Bienno is close to the Oglio river cycle route, a splendid itinerary which connects the Tonale Pass with the Po Plain.

And what about Bienno’s traditional dishes? The place of honor undisputedly goes to the casoncelli, ravioli with a traditional local stuffing of roasted meat, sausage, bread, and parsley served with a sauce made with melted butter and sage, and a generous sprinkling of Grana Padano cheese. Polenta, local cheeses, and spongada (soft focaccia covered in sugar) are also widely popular.

Not-to-miss attractions

Church of Santa Maria Annunciata

Built in the 15th century, it is located in the center of the town: its tall, spired bell tower with mullioned windows, the facade embellished with a portal in simona stone and white marble, and the rose window above, mark the transition from Gothic to Renaissance style. Built on the remains of earlier constructions, it is an example of a “rural parish church”, a single-room building with a roof and facade with a gabled profile and a loggia leaning against the counterfacade.

Mulino (Mill) Museum and Vita Contadina (Farming Life) Museum

Those passing through Valle Camonica cannot miss a visit to the Mill and Museum of Peasant Life in Bienno. It’s a valuable example of local history perfectly preserved thanks to the efforts of Francesca and Battista, a pair of elderly gentlemen ready to welcome patrons with a smile, illustrating the mechanism of the mill and all the secrets of this ancient art, until the final product is achieved.

Ethnographic Museum of Iron, Folk Arts, and Traditions. Forge Museum

Together with the Mill and Museum of Peasant Life, the Forge Museum constitutes the original nucleus of the Ethnographic Museum of Iron, Folk Arts and Traditions in Bienno, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.

Artists’ workshops

An evocative environment available to artists traveling through Valle Camonica and eager to make their creativity known, the Artists’ House is housed inside a historic 16th-century building.

Quercus Woods

The mountains of Bienno boast a Land Art excellence with installations created by local artists: the Quercus Woods, which can be reached from the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli and can be visited via a beautiful trekking route. Protagonists of the forest are fascinating creatures (including the famous Rocco, the giant owl, complete with bench and offering a panoramic view) created with the three main materials of the area: wood, stone and iron.
