The Olivetan Benedictine Abbey in Rodengo Saiano is one of the most famous religious complexes in Franciacorta. Founded in 1090, it was originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas; from 2019 it is also dedicated to Paul VI, a Brescian saint to whom this place was so dear.
What to see at the Abbey
An architectural jewel surrounded by calm and guarding important artistic masterpieces, the Abbey in Rodengo Saiano is the ideal destination to enjoy a Sunday of contemplation and tranquility with your family.
Still inhabited by Olivetan monks, the Abbey boasts a Renaissance church with a simple facade and an elegant 15th-century prothyrum.
Inside is Moretto’s altarpiece on which St. Peter and St. Paul are depicted, as well as Grazio Cossali’s large painting representing the Wedding at Cana (1608). Among the wonders that most impress patrons are the three cloisters – 15th-century, 16th-century and 17th-century, the latter known as the “Cisterna” – and Romanino’s frescoes in the guest quarters refectory.
We recommend that you don’t miss the refectory, the 106-meter-long monumental gallery giving access to some 30 monastic cells, and the small museum of sacred objects.
Together with the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa in Provaglio d’Iseo, the Olivetan Abbey of Saints Nicholas and Paul VI is part of the Cluniac sites in Europe.
