A large and spectacular amphitheater is located in the valley overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Iseo: welcome to the Zone Rock Pyramids Nature Reserve!

Characterized by the unique presence of numerous earth pyramids topped by wide rock caps, the Zone Rock Pyramids Regional Nature Reserve covers an area of about 21 hectares at an elevation between 400 meters and 600 meters above sea level.

The vast morainic deposit that gives rise to the Zone Rock Pyramids was left about 150,000 years ago by the massive glacier from the Camonica valley; during the third glaciation (Riss), it filled the basin now occupied by Lake Iseo with a thickness of more than 600 meters, penetrating the Bagnadore valley with a lateral tongue.

The phenomenon originates from a combination of two factors: weathering erosion above this moraine, and the protective action performed by the larger boulders as “caps” on the “earth columns” below. When the summatal cap falls, the pyramid rapidly disintegrates until it finds another cap at a lower level.

All around the Reserve is an extremely relevant environmental context: in fact, Zone is set in one of the most beautiful plateaus of the entire Sebino-Camuno area.
