A dive into the Middle Ages in the heart of Camonica Valley. This is what the Castello di Breno (Breno Castle) offers, one of the most appreciated local historical sites. Awaiting you at the top, after a short walk from the city center, is a splendid panoramic view of the valley.
The Castello di Breno and the charm of different eras
Built as a set of towers and palaces during the reign of Frederick I Barbarossa (1100 – 1200) and converted into a military stronghold under the Republic of Venice (1400 – 1500), the Castello di Breno actually preserves prehistoric traces dating back to the 8th century BC.
A fascinating journey through different eras that starts at the entrance of the castle and accompanies tourists throughout its core, from the crenellated walls to the noble tower-house up to the 20-meter tower open to visitors. Don’t miss the remains of the Church of San Michele of Lombardic origin, the oldest find discovered in Breno.
A favourite destination for Sunday outings, the Castello di Breno has a bar-restaurant and large green open spaces ideal for a quiet family day enjoying the magnificent surrounding view.
The castle is now home to musical events and recreational and physical activities, including the archery competition and the characteristic historical re-enactment of the Camunerie.
