The heart of devotion to the Virgin and a place dear to Pope Paul VI, the monumental complex of Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most important points of reference for Brescian spirituality.

From the wonderful Shrine to the sumptuous Basilica up to the suggestive cloister, discover its attractions and its history!

Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the triumph of the Baroque

Characterized by a three-nave interior richly decorated with approximately 350 stuccoes and frescoes dating between late Mannerism and early Baroque, the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses valuable paintings by Pietro Rosa, Alessandro Maganza, Moretto, Francesco Maffei, and Francesco Giugno. On the altar of the chapel at the end of the left nave the early 15th-century wooden Crucifix stands out.

The Basilica preserves the relic of the beatification of Paul VI, namely the T-shirt that the Saint wore during the Manila attack in 1970.

Cloister, shrine and facade

refined cloister, featuring a fountain adorned with a statue by Sante Calegari in the center, connects the basilica to the Shrine, built where the ancient 13th-century church dedicated to the Nativity of Mary once stood.

The current appearance is due to the neo-15th-century reconstruction by  architect Antonio Tagliaferri (1876) and the frescoes by Modesto Faustini and Cesare Bertolotti; on the altar is a Nativity by the Foppesca school.

Outside, visitors are welcomed by a simple facade enriched by a magnificent portal coming from the ancient church of the congregation, destroyed by the demolitions carried out for the Venetian esplanade of Borgo Pile.

Decorated in the Lombard style of the second half of the 15th century, the stone portal preserves the wooden doors made by Filippo Morari from Cremona, dated 1490.

Built starting from 1522 by the Gerolamini friars, the complex of Santa Maria delle Grazie recently underwent a two years’ restoration that brought back its original splendor.
